How to Prepare for a Red Light Session
New to red light therapy or prepping for your first session at The Tanning Shop? From skin preparation and clothing choices to aftercare and routine tips, this guide outlines what to expect before and after full-body red light therapy so you can approach your session with confidence.
Red Light Prep Timeline
Whether you’re using red light therapy for skin rejuvenation, muscle recovery, or wellness support, arriving with clean, well-hydrated skin is key. Healthy, hydrated cells allow the red and near-infrared light to penetrate deeper for optimal results.
48-72 Hours Before (Sensitive Skin)
If you have sensitive skin, rosacea, or acne-prone skin, switch to a gentle skincare routine a few days beforehand. Avoid exfoliating acids, scrubs, and peels.
24 Hours Before
All skin types should avoid strong active ingredients in the 24 hours leading up to treatment, as these can increase skin photosensitivity. Stay well hydrated.
On the day
Make sure to stay hydrated. Cleanse the treatment area thoroughly using a gentle cleanser and avoid applying creams, lotions, or oils, other than treatment-specific products.

What to Wear for Red Light Therapy
For a full-body experience, we recommend wearing underwear, swimwear, or sportswear, or going nude for the treatment. This allows for maximum exposure to the red light wavelengths. Please be aware that only areas of the skin directly exposed to the light will benefit from red light treatment.
If you’re attending for a targeted session, you can expose only the area you wish to treat and wear comfortable clothing elsewhere. All treatment rooms are fully private, so you can undress to your preferred level with confidence.
Be sure to put on your complimentary protective eyewear before starting your session.
Prep Your Skin
We stock a range of red-light compatible skincare products designed for use before and after red light therapy sessions. These products are formulated to complement red light routines and support skin comfort. If you want to maximise your skincare results or add an extra layer of nourishment, our consultants can happily advise on suitable options.
For pre-therapy protection, we recommend:
- Micro Mist Pre-Therapy Spray: a lightweight mist with Aloe Vera and Vitamin C that restores your skin’s natural pH level
- Pre & Post Therapy Under Eye Serum: gentle serum that helps boost the anti-aging benefits of red light treatment around the eye area
Red Light Therapy Aftercare
The beauty of red light therapy is that there’s very little downtime, and most people can return to their normal routine straight away. To get the most out of your session, our top aftercare tips include:
- Using gentle, hydrating skincare products to support the skin barrier
- Drinking plenty of water to rehydrate
- Avoiding harsh products that could irritate the skin
- Keeping sessions consistent as advised for your routine
